I would like to suggest the classic comedy movie Coming to America. It is the
touching story of Prince Akeem Joffer (Eddie Murphy) of the African country of
Zamunda travelling to America to find the woman of his dreams after being
disappointed by the simplicity of his arranged fiancée. Once he gets there, he falls in love with
Lisa McDowell and woes her from the ever so popular Darryl Jenks. However, he must maintain the illusion that
he is poor so that he will know whether he is truly loved for the man he is,
and not just his money.
It seems that this comedy involves many of the traits that
have been observed throughout this course.
For one, Northrup Frye’s philosophies find their way into this
movie. Northrup Frye states that whether
or not something is funny lies in how removed someone is from a situation. For example, we see that as soon as he arrives
with all of his worldly possessions, Akeem is almost immediately robbed and his
possessions sold. However, he doesn’t
even care, and his servant seems to care more about the crime than he
does.
Additionally, Coming
to America was very relevant for the times.
Not only did it include Eddie Murphy, one of the most popular actors of
the time, but it also made cameos to other movies like Trading Places (another Eddie Murphy movie). Most importantly, it focused around a central
theme of the times: true love, the kind that lasts forever, that never grows
old, and that will solve everything that is wrong in the world (or at least,
for the characters).
In short, this is a pretty awesome movie. It’s was made in the 80’s and I happen to love
this kind of movie. If this is your jam
but you haven’t seen it, I definitely recommend it!
This isn't the greatest trailer in the world, as it pretty much gives away everything, but here it is:
